Press Feature: Art of Nurturing New Choreographers (CultureMap Houston)

A huge thanks to Nancy Wozny for highlighting our Artistic Director Stephen Mills in CultureMap Houston’s “The art of nurturing new choreographers: It’s not sexy, but it’s the only way to move.” The article quotes Stephen:

“My belief is that art in the 21st century centers around illuminating the world in which we live. Simply linking existing steps together is not rigorous enough to accomplish that task. In selecting choreographers, our team seeks to identify those people who are working to create new movement vocabularies; we look for artists who challenge dance structure as we understand it today.”

Ballet Austin’s New American Talent/Dance competition is Feb 17-19. It’s a great way to catch new works from three of the nation’s best up-and-coming choreographers and help choose the winner yourself.

Press Feature: Austin Arts Groups Feel Strains of Growth (Austin American-Statesman)

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

There’s more behind a great performance than well-worn pointe shoes. Arts organizations need what every other organization needs to thrive: money. And that money doesn’t pour in effortlessly. That’s the topic that Austin American-Statesman Arts Critic Jeanne Claire van Ryzin focused on last week in her article “Austin arts groups feel strains of growth.”

Here’s an excerpt from the article referencing Ballet Austin and our Executive Director Cookie Ruiz:

“Both Ballet Austin and Zach Theatre report solid economics with no debts. [Cookie] Ruiz said the ballet’s board began planning for an economic downtown before the 2008 stock market crash and made cuts, while adding a $100,000 contingency surplus into the budget. And the company clearly has something Austin wants to buy: The ballet saw its highest-grossing season, with 42,257 paid attendees and nearly $2 million in ticket sales, this past year.”

Thanks to Jeanne Claire for the mention. For the entire article, visit

Hula Your Heart Out at Ballet Austin

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Is it just me, or is the whole world vacationing in Hawaii this summer? Maybe it’s because the islands have been in the news as the Obama family’s favorite destination or the travel deals are too good to resist, but everyone seems to be getting the aloha fever. So what about the rest of us who long for the island breezes but don’t have a trip to the Big Island scheduled?  Don’t fret: Ballet Austin has you covered.

Did you know that we offer Hula drop-in classes and Hula courses led by experienced dancers?  Oahu native and Community Education Director Pei-San Brown holds the rank of Kumu Hula (Hula Master) and was honored to compete in the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, the world’s most prestigious hula competition. Honolulu native and Ballet Austin Hula Instructor Vivian Kaw also competed in the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and has studied the art form for a greater part of her life.

Pei-San and Vivian are leading several upcoming opportunities for hula enthusiasts at Ballet Austin:

  • Come Dance! 2011 (Sunday, August 28) – This FREE day of dance at Ballet Austin is the perfect opportunity to try hula on for size, with two hula classes scheduled during the day. For more information, visit our Come Dance! 2011 page.
  • Beginning Hula – This popular Monday evening course is currently filled to capacity so if you’d like to take the plunge, sign up now for the fall course beginning in September. Call the Butler Community School at 512.476.9051.
  • Continuing Hula – There are currently spots available in this course taught by Vivian on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. Participants should have previous hula experience under their belts for this next level. Visit the Butler Community School page for more details.
  • Intermediate Hula (Teen/Adults) – This Tuesday evening class at 7 pm is also for those who have hula experience. It’s a drop-in class, so visit the class registration page.

Let’s make it a date: stop by, say aloha, and join me for some hula, Austin!
