Introduction to Juggling!

Have you always wanted to learn how to juggle? Have you tried it but just can't keep the objects in the air?

Intro to Juggling is a workshop offering a fun, unique, and informative experience. By the end of 6 weeks you will have learned the basic principles of juggling and will able to impress your friends!

Taught by two expert jugglers, the workshop will challenge both your mental and physical capabilities and include both group activities and individual attention. The workshop will focus on developing your ability to juggle at least three balls, but will also challenge those who learn more quickly.

Did you know that some of the benefits of juggling include:

A fun physical activity promoting movement and burning up to 280 calories or more per hour.

Beginning Ballet 2 for is a workshop for adults who wish to continue the work of the Absolute Beginning Ballet Workshop, or have had an introduction to basic ballet.

This workshop will further prepare the adult beginner for Beginning Ballet drop-in classes or the Beginning Ballet 3 Workshop offered through Ballet Austin's Butler Community School. The Beginning Ballet 2 workshop will add more complex combinations and center work, and will develop confidence, coordination, strength, flexibility and body awareness.

Beginning Ballet 3 Workshop

The Beginning Ballet 3 Workshop continues the work of Absolute Beginning Ballet and Beginning Ballet 2 workshops. It is also open to anyone who has had basic barre and center.

Beginning Ballet 3 will further prepare the adult beginner for Beginning Ballet drop-in classes offered through the BCS. The Beginning Ballet 3 workshop will add more complex combinations and center work, and will learn jumps. Ballet develops confidence, coordination, strength, flexibility and body awareness and is a great workout for adults.

Beginning Pointe Workshop for Adults

Wednesdays, June 11 - July 2 / 8:15pm - 9:15pm (4 wk summer Short Course)

Whether it is to fulfill a lifelong dream, or to re-visit the days of ballet class, many adults love the thought of taking a ballet class en pointe. The 6-week workshop teaches basic beginning pointe work to the intermediate level dancer.

Classes will take the students through fundamental pointe work and exercises. For the safety of the students, it is highly recommended that they take one to two ballet technique classes a week leading up to and during enrollment in the pointe workshop.

The workshop includes 6 1-hour classes. There will NOT be class on Wednesday, March 26 due to the instructor's performance schedule.

(must be 18 or older with previous ballet experience at the intermediate level. Instructor's approval required)

Absolute Beginning Modern Dance for Adults

It is never too late to learn anything new, but Modern dance can be especially fun for adults.

Modern dance is an expressive and highly individualized dance form. The body is fully integrated in modern dance, often utilizing internal rhythms and movement concepts. With technique less restrictive than classical ballet, modern is the perfect jumping off point for self-expression.

This workshop will teach modern technique from the very beginning, introducing modern concepts through exercises and choreography designed to promote proper alignment, strength, flexibility and coordination. Taught by Alex Miller

Absolute Beginning Samba Brazilian Dance Workshop

You don't have to fly to Brazil to experience the fun of Brazilian dance!

Brazil is internationally famous for its colorful, high-energy "Carnaval," the pre-Lent celebration that packs in nearly a week of non-stop music and dance.

This workshop will introduce students to samba, the national dance of Brazil. Drills, progressions, and simple combinations will be used to develop form, style, and coordination. Ideal for first-time students of samba or those who want to reinforce basic skills.

All levels are welcome. Absolutely no experience necessary; just the ability to let loose and go wild!

Hula (Beginning Level) - Hawaiian Dance

Hula dancing is a beautiful and graceful form of dance combining foot movement along with meaningful hand gestures to tell a story or teach a lesson.

Whether you have a trip planned to the Hawaiian Islands or just want to learn something new, this is a fun workshop.

If you've never taken hula before, this is for you! Learn hula from the very beginning and experience a culture that is full of beauty and exciting adventure. Hula classes include dances in the ancient form of hula (hula kahiko) as well as the more contemporary form of hula (hula 'auana). Hawaiian history and culture are also discussed as they relate to each hula learned in class.

This is the second level in our hula workshop series. Elementary hula picks up where Beginning Hula left off. If you have taken Beginning Hula or have had some hula experience in the past, this workshop is for you to continue to learn and experience the beautiful dance of the Hawaiian islands. Gain more knowledge and hone your hula skills, perfecting your skills in the hula basics and learning more hawaiian dance choreography. You will love the story-telling aspect of hula.

Intro to Classical Rhythms of India - Bharathanatyam

You will love Classical Rhythms of India, with the focus being on Bharatanatyam, one of the most cherished and the most popular of classical Indian dance-forms. It is considered the epitome of Indian cultural expression.

Music, rhythm and expression make up this ancient traditional classical dance.

Originating thousands of years ago, Bharatanatyam is rich in its history and cultural heritage. Using Yoga, it involves moving the body in an artistic and elegant fashion with dance themes typically revolving around Indian mythology and folk stories. It is traditionally set to Indian Carnatic music.

This workshop in classical Indian dance will be an introduction to Bharatanatyam, including an introduction to the basic aspects of Nrtta (pure dance) and some elements of Abhinaya. Each class will start with a Yoga-style warm-up so that muscles are well stretched and then move into the dance. Learn this beautiful dance style of India as well as get a great workout.

No dance experience is necessary.

Rhythms of Bollywood Dance

A 4-week Bollywood Dance Workshop = 4 weeks of fun! Anyone can Bollywood!

If you saw the Oscar winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" then you know Bollywood! And now YOU can Bollywood too!

The term Bollywood was created by combining two names, Bombay (the city now called Mumbai) and Hollywood. Bollywood based in Mumbai is India's, and the world's, largest film industry in terms of the number of films produced. It is not unusual to see Western pop and pure classical dance numbers side by side in a Bollywood film.

With the success of films such as "Slumdog Millionaire", Bollywood films and dance have taken the world by storm. And Bollywood just makes us smile!

Bollywood Dance has various influences outside of traditional Indian dance forms and include western dance styles. Come learn some of the different Bollywood dances during the 4 weeks

Salsa Latin Dance Workshop

Tuesdays, June 10 - July 15 / 8:00pm - 9:30pm (6 wks)

A fun six-week workshop that will provide the foundation for Salsa dancing. Especially for partners wanting to dance together but fun for singles too!

Participants will learn the basic Salsa steps, basic turns, fundamentals of the lead & follow, the cross-body lead, and the importance of the "Cuban Motion". The basic steps of Merengue* and Bachata* will also be taught during the workshop.

All dances learned are perfect for social settings and club dancing. *Merenge and Bachata- are music and dance from the Dominican Republic. Both dances are extremely popular in the U.S and are super fun to dance to in clubs and at parties.

Partners enrolling together encouraged, but not required. (each persons will need to enroll)

Creative Dance Workshop for Special Needs Teens and Adults

Saturdays, July 12 - August 16 / 10:00am - 10:45am (6 wks)

Creative Dance for Special Needs is a fun and beneficial creative movement workshop for ages 13 through adults with developmental disabilities.

Through the use of imagination, movement, and music, participants will explore shapes and movement patterns, and discover how our bodies are able to move to a variety of rhythms. Participants will use colorful scarves and other safe props to enhance creative movement, providing each individual with the opportunity to explore the world of dance while also developing important cognitive and physical skills.

By the end of this workshop students will gain social and motor skills, as well as improve strength and coordination. Most importantly, they will have lots of fun in a safe environment.

This workshop is taught by one of Ballet Austin's professional dancers, Grace Morton, who grew up not only training as a dancer, but being involved in a special needs community through her sister who is developmentally disabled. Grace has experience teaching special needs dance classes where she explored movement and cognitive development with a goal to help each unique student progress mentally and physically.

The class is open to parent participation as an option to assist their child if needed or desired.

Private instruction is also available upon request.

General physical fitness and targeted exercises to improve balance can prevent falls. But so can activities that hone your cognitive fitness. A sharp mind helps you to think and stay on your feet. We depend on an intricate balance system to keep us upright. The inner ear, which senses head motions, plays an important role. So does the body's somatosensory system, which relays the feeling of the ground beneath your feet. And, of course, vision tips you off to obstacles around you.

The brain takes in all this information, plans movements, and carries them out. The Better Balance & Movement workshop will focus on promoting and maintaining balance, coordination, and posture through a series of simple brain and muscle exercises as well as focusing on strengthening the core of the body.

This workshop is excellent for people of all ages, but especially beneficial to the older adult or those dealing with the affects of neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. It is also very helpful for individuals recovering from injury, experiencing declining vision, hearing and muscle strength.

Research shows that if an individual continues to exercise and practice balance activities throughout life, they can avert the devastating effects of a fall and stay active and independent longer.

Practical principles that may be carried out at home will be taught during each session.

Pilates Mat Basics Workout - This is Pilates for Beginners!

Pilates has become very popular and for good reason.

Our body movement originates from the center of our body and the muscles there help us to maintain our body's balance and posture. This is what Pilates is all about; core strength and flexibility, and posture.

This Pilates Mat workshop will introduce and work on the basics of Pilates and provide an affordable Pilates option. At the completion of the workshop you will not only feel the benefits, you will be ready to move on to other Pilates-based classes or consider appointments in the Pilates Center.

Working against resistance is essential to the Pilates exercises, which are designed to train the abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks; the core. But you can accomplish this using either a mat, where your own body weight creates resistance, or a reformer, where pulleys and springs create resistance. By working the core muscles you improve strength and posture and develop a lean, long line.

Taught by Certified Pilates Instructor.

Pilates Pink Ribbon Post-Operative Workout

Tuesdays, June 10 - August 12 / 1:00pm - 1:45pm (10 weeks - if unable to come some weeks that is fine)

The Pilates Pink Ribbon Program is a post-operative exercise program for women recovering from breast cancer surgery. The Pink Ribbon Program will help stretch and strengthen the shoulder, chest, back, and abdominal muscles, allowing women to regain full range of motion to those areas affected by breast cancer surgery.

This program is suitable whether your surgery was recent or several years ago, but it is recommended that women should wait 4-6 weeks post op before enrolling in the course. The Pilates Pink Ribbon Program will offer strengthening, self-esteem and quality of life to breast cancer survivors. The program works in conjunction with your doctor's recommendations for an exercise program.

Personal instruction given by Vlada Sheber, Ballet Austin's Pilates Program Director & Certified Core Connections Pilates Instructor. Ms. Sheber is a Post-Rehabilitative Breast Cancer Exercise Specialist with the The Pilates Pink Ribbon Program.

LOCATION: 501 W. 3rd St. (downtown on the corner of 3rd and San Antonio St)

PARKING: If parking is not available in Ballet Austin's lot, FREE DAYTIME PARKING IS AVAILABLE AT CITY HALL: Ballet Austin validates parking in the parking garage underneath Austin City Hall, 301 W. Second Street. The garage entrance to the City Hall parking garage is located on the East side of the building on Lavaca Street (one way street running North). Enter the garage from the left lane and follow the signs to visitor parking.
