The Carnival of the Animals

Since 2000, Build-a-Ballet has introduced thousands of elementary-aged students to the process of creating a work of art. Dancers from Ballet Austin’s exclusive Butler Fellowship program perform nine excerpts from The Carnival of the Animals with choreography by Ballet Austin's Artistic Director, Stephen Mills, and original music by Camille Saint Saëns.

Students participate in choreographing a movement phrase that is eventually incorporated into the ballet. We also discuss elements of choreography, including use of space, rhythm, timing, and partnering. This 50-minute program is presented at Ballet Austin or in schools.

Our school was thrilled to experience such a high caliber performance, incorporating so many educational components of dance and music.  This type of program helps students to begin embracing a lifelong love of the arts and opens their eyes to a world of possibilities.

I am the music teacher at Trinity and I brought two first grade classes to the program. Both of the classroom teachers loved the program, loved seeing the dancers up close, loved the interaction with thestudents, and would like to come again next year. The program was the right length and the children were captivated. Way to go! Thanks Ballet Austin for a great program!!

They loved it! And have commented about the ballet dancers enthusiastically as well - they were very impressed that boys can be dancers too. JJ really enjoyed the performance…his first comment when he walked in the door was that “boys are good ballerinas!”
