Find Your Center: A Community School On September 9th, from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Ballet Austin throws a Grand Opening Community Celebration that invites you to ‘Find Your Center.’ The 5 hours of dancing, classes, music, activities, and contests marks a new era for dance, movement, and health in Austin – a new era of open participation for everyone. This is made possible through the Butler Community School.

The Butler Dance Education Center is not exclusively for the staff, academy, and dancers to train and prepare for their popular staged productions. The Butler Community School was conceived as a place for movement workshops for anyone (including Pilates, yoga, and other exercise classes) along with open dance classes ranging from ballroom to jazz to hula to hip hop. There will also be educational series’ where anyone can learn about dance from the dancers, choreographers, and the artistic director himself.

"The Butler Community School will allow Ballet Austin to expand and develop our educational programs, providing an invaluable opportunity to transform our educational role in the community," said Cookie Ruiz, Executive Director of the Ballet. "It will make the greatest possible cultural, social and educational contribution to Central Texas while supporting our vision of democratizing dance, breaking down key barriers to accessibility, including finances, physical challenges, cultural context and geography."

Additionally, under the same roof, the 287-seat venue AustinVentures StudioTheater will be a place where people can catch a set of dance like they can catch a set of music at Antone’s! Of course, the box office staff will be on site to help patrons get a seat at any or all of the company’s 2007/2008 Season productions.

Fun Facts about The Butler Dance Education Center and Community School
The facility is centered amongst a number of construction projects in a 3-block area. The 2ND Street District, the almost completed AMLI residential tower, the 44-story 360 Condominiums, future Austin City Limits studios, Austin Children’s Museum, the new Seaholm redevelopment, and the soon to be renovated Austin Music Hall will surround the new building. Ballet Austin’s attractive and functional center will bring 1,100 dance students and their families into the midst of this new urban, multi-use area surrounding the new landmark Austin City Hall building.

The innovative 34,000 sq ft complex, which is a dramatic repurposing of the Aus-Tex printing facility, boasts:
• Seven rehearsal studios
• Pilates, yoga and exercise studios
• 60-seat community meeting room
• Box office and community information desk
• 15 restrooms plus locker rooms with showers
• Community School with added classrooms and classes, more room for more students and expanded
  curriculum
• A two-story glass wall with a retractable scrim for massive projections
• AustinVentures StudioTheater: an in-house performance space with capacity to seat 275 people, made possible by a $1 million donation by Austin Ventures for state of the art lighting, sound equipment, and retractable seating.
