Camp Time at Ballet Austin
By Bill Piner, Director of Schools

One of the best parts of my job is having the opportunity to watch the dozens of young campers who take part in one of our summer camps each year. They sing, act, dance and make props or costumes. They listen intently, try new things and through it all, have a great time! I guess it is the unbridled energy and sheer joy that they bring to the studio that draws me in. It reminds me of why we are here; why they are here…dancing is fun!

It also takes me back to when my own daughter was little and was participating in some of these same camps. It reminds me of how much fun it was watching her grow and explore new things. I have a picture of her taking part in the first year of Dance Discoveries. It is in my office and is one of my favorites. It was the summer of 1999 and the camp was called Alternative Moves back then. We were still in our Burnet Road Studio…it seems like a lifetime ago! We have come miles since then, both figuratively and literally, but the essence stays the same. Children love to be creative and move, and parents love seeing the world through their children’s eyes.

My daughter turned 16 this week and I’m feeling old. Call it “sentimental old dad” syndrome, but every summer when I see a new crop of campers come through the doors of Ballet Austin, I see my own little girl again…and I smile.
