KLRU Televises Stephen Millís Hamlet
By Lance Johnson, Marketing Director

On Sunday, May 24 at 4:30 pm, KLRU and KLRU-HD will broadcast a recording of our production of Hamlet from the February 2009 production at the Long Center. Emmy-Award winning filmmaker Dutch Rall recorded the work in hi-def and directed the film. Dutch is an award-winning producer, director, cinematographer and editor for PBS who has worked with us before and always produces amazing work.

In 2000, Ballet Austin premiered Stephen Mills’ contemporary and distinctive interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, hailed by The Dallas Morning News as “dance theater at its best”. Since its debut, five other companies around the country (BalletMet in Columbus, Dayton Ballet, Ohio Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet) have performed it to rave reviews. Nine years after first delighting Central Texas audiences, Hamlet returned this past Valentine’s Day weekend and Dutch was there to capture the magic.

The production blends traditional and contemporary ballet to create a story primarily told through movement and the haunting, percussive and richly textured sound of the music. It  features a hypnotic arrangement from composer Philip Glass, exquisite choreography, stunning sets and high fashion costumes (Armani suits and velvet dresses) – each heightening the excitement, heartbreak and revenge embedded throughout this classic Shakespearean tale.

For those of you that did get the chance to see the work you know what a spectacle it is…. And for those of you that did not get an opportunity to catch it at The Long Center, watching it in high definition in the comfort of your living room is the next best thing.

The program will also be re-broadcast on June 4 @ 8pm and June 10 @ 7pm
