The Nutcracker Docent Program
By Marla Hiller, Ballet Austin Volunteer Docent
Did you know that each year in preparation for the month-long run of The Nutcracker approximately 112 volunteer docents travel to 38 school districts to offer educational presentations to over 9,000 elementary school students? This is an incredible number of students to reach!
I have been a docent for Ballet Austin for seven years. I am involved in this program for many reasons. I love the art of dance and have ever since I was “bitten by the bug” when I was in high school. I am fortunate enough to have a daughter who dances 20 hours a week, a son who does hip hop a few hours a week and a husband of 25 years who enjoys attending dance performances. My husband even made a guest appearance as Mother Ginger for a School Show several years ago!
Did you know that if a person has not attended a ballet performance by the time they are 18 years old it is likely that they will NEVER attend a ballet performance? This fact alone is enough to make me want to docent year after year, but more than that it is incredible to see young students intently listen and learn about the art of ballet. Not only do they get the awesome experience of learning about ballet and The Nutcracker, but it culminates in the incredible event of actually seeing Ballet Austin perform!
Being a docent for Ballet Austin is an extremely rewarding experience!
