Butler Dance Education Center in National Spotlight
By Gail Romney, Director of Operations and Finance
The success of Ballet Austin’s schools and facilities has garnered the interest of major dance companies throughout the U.S. and last month Ballet Austin hosted 14 representatives from Pittsburgh Ballet, Louisville Ballet, and Kansas City Ballet who held a Dance Summit in the Thornton Community Board Room at the Butler Dance Education Center. Representatives from two more companies, The Pennsylvania Ballet and the Atlanta Ballet have scheduled visits for the near future.
These companies are coming here to learn more about how our schools function, how we are managing the growth, and how it all integrates with the new facility. All the companies are in the process of evaluating additions and/or new construction. Needless to say, Schools Executive Director, Bill Piner, and Schools Director of Administration, Vicki Parsons, were in the limelight. Cookie and I also participated in the forum, adding insight into strategic planning and the process of design and construction.
Ballet Austin’s Butler Community School, a new concept in the way most dance schools operate, offers a variety of classes at all levels and for all ages and has attracted over 1,000 new students in its first year. Combined with Ballet Austin Academy, our classical training school, we are now one of the largest dance schools in the nation that is associated with a professional dance company.
