After studying the Ballet Austin website and thinking about it all for a while, she drove down to Austin one weekend to be in the audience at New American Talent.
“After that, I knew that this is where I wanted to be.”
Kirby auditioned and was accepted into the summer program. “I did the first three weeks and knew that this was going to be difficult. SMU was pretty rigorous, but their main focus was to work on your artistry as opposed to technique. At Ballet Austin, you’re working towards perfection.”
Kirby was surprised and thrilled when she was accepted into the apprentice program. Her second year in the program, she enjoyed working with Mr. Mills on his piece Argelina that he set on Ballet Austin II.
Now, as a professional company member, she’s finding that there’s yet another different feel to her life in dance.
“I know there are areas where I need to improve and every day, I feel like I’m progressing towards becoming a more mature artist.”
As for her personal life, Kirby is mow married to a sweetheart from her SMU days, Jonathan Wallis, who is a business consultant with Accenture and was her resident assistant in her dorm at SMU.
She loves living and working downtown and what’s more, she walks to Ballet Austin every day. Life is good!
